MMPA invests $122M to expand dairy processing, acquire Remus plant

The Michigan Milk Producers Association is increasing its processing capacity in the state through a plant acquisition and a production expansion.

Chairman Doug Chapin says the more than $122 million investments support a resurgence in demand for cottage cheese and the region’s dairy economy for the long term.

The Leprino Foods’ plant in Remus has had a long relationship with the cooperative, including previously being owned by MMPA in the early 1980s.

The world’s largest mozzarella producer closed the facility earlier this year after nearly 40 years in the community and nearly two years of downsizing.

MMPA is also adding three million additional pounds of ultrafiltered milk daily processing capacity at its Ovid plant for products like high-protein yogurts and ready-to-drink protein shakes.

The projects are being supported by a Michigan Business Development Program grant and two separate Alternative State Essential Services Assessment exemptions from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.
