MMPA Young Dairy Cooperators build farm and family after a blazing beginning

A young dairy farming couple says they had to build the farm of their dreams twice before taking over as the fifth generation of their family operation.

Bryan and Molly Benson milk almost 500 cows in northern Michigan. Just weeks before a new robotic barn was set to open—and the week they got engaged—the barn burned to the ground.

“His mom came up to him because it was getting late in the morning and she said, ‘Bud, I know you’re really sad, but you got to go out and feed the calves,’” Molly remembers. “And I just remember thinking, she’s right. You have to keep going.”

Molly tells Brownfield that strong perseverance has helped keep the farm stay in business for more than 150 years.

“It’s cool to think that there are people that their grandparents and parents started and were born at this location and now they do agriculture now—so yeah, it’s a tough family,” she shares.

Eight years and four children later, Bryan says they’re still trying to find balance between the farm and family.

“Short-term goals, I would say create more efficiency on the dairy side so that I can spend more time with my family,” he shares. “Long-term goals, pay down some debt. And, my hope would be that we are in a place 15 years from now where our kids can stay here, and take over the farm, and have a good life.”

Molly says she hopes the sixth generation can learn the value of becoming something greater than themselves.

“It’s one of the beauties of dairy farming, we get to do these generational things that hand skills down from generation to generation,” she says. “He learned these things from his dad, you know? That to me actually is always one of the big goals that I’m trying to push. Just how do we keep it with each other that we’re working with? How do we build up our kids?”

The Bensons have been named Michigan Milk Producers Association’s Outstanding Young Dairy Cooperators for 2026 and will take part in a leadership cohort supported by the National Milk Producers Federation over the next year.
