MO Ag Dept says Corn Xpress vending machines not legal
The Missouri Department of Agriculture is advising farmers and other Missourians about a brand of corn vending machines that is not legal for use in the state.
Danielle Reddick, head of the department’s Device and Commodity Inspection program, tells Brownfield the Corn Xpress vending machines do not actually weigh the corn that customers buy.
“Anyone can alter the auger timer inside. There’s no way to seal it to make sure that it’s not tampered with. So at any point, someone can go in there and adjust the auger and it just runs for however long someone determines how long it takes to dispense 50 pounds of corn.”
Reddick says the company has been notified it is in violation of Missouri law but it has not responded.
She says it’s a case of buyer beware of purchasing the vending machines or using them, “There are definitely ways that the company could go and make this product legal. There ARE legal devices like this, manufactured by other companies. They just, they skipped those steps.”
She says the quality of the corn, generally used as wildlife feed for deer and turkeys, has also not been assessed. There are three such machines in the state, in southeast Missouri.
