MO farmer: heat stress puts corn, soybeans at tipping point

A farmer in northwest Missouri says the crops are at a tipping point, and what happens with the weather moving forward makes a difference.

“If we don’t get some good rain, we’re going to really start possibly losing some yield.”

Andy Hull in Nodaway County tells Brownfield he’s been satisfied with his corn and soybeans up until this week, when the heat index hit up to 120 degrees in parts of the state.

“Over the last weekend we’ve been seeing a lot more firing in the corn on the lower leaves, and then some of the tougher knobs for the soybeans have been graying off a little bit and rolling.”

He says that makes him nervous.

Rain is in the forecast across portions of Missouri as the week wraps up, and Hull says he’s optimistic it will provide the moisture this crop needs to finish strong.
