MO governor issues another drought alert

Missouri Governor Mike Parson has issued another executive order for a drought alert in the state.

The latest U.S. Drought Monitor says more than 65% of Missouri is experiencing drought conditions and that includes 88 counties with moderate, severe or extreme drought.

Ag Director Chris Chinn says the fall drought is more typical and the state’s livestock producers are being affected, especially in southwest Missouri.

“They started feeding hay earlier than we thought they would, but luckily, there was good hay production this spring and many people got two good hay cuttings.”

Chinn says farmers and ranchers are optimistic for more precipitation this winter.

“So that next spring will be a more typical year for growing. The one bright spot is feed prices have come down quite a lot compared the previous drought year.”

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will once again activate the Drought Assessment Committee, which helps assist those affected by drought, but Chinn says the next meeting hasn’t been scheduled yet.

The new drought alert is in effect through March 31, 2025.
