More canine teams appointed for border inspection

Customs and Broder Protection is training more canine teams to help detect ag products coming into the US in passengers’ luggage.

“I have 124 teams today. We will have 184 by the end of calendar year 2021.”

CBP Officer Kevin Harriger says they use Beagles because of their drive for food, their work ethic and their love for people. He says in hectic airport settings, Beagles are less intimidating than other breeds and are more efficient than humans.

“A well trained handler and his or her puppy can discern whether you have pork, pork products, beef products, chicken products, fresh fruits and vegetables a lot quicker than my questioning and running you through an x-ray and opening all of those suitcases.”

USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection service helps with the Beagle Brigade program, designed to prevent foreign animal diseases from entering the US.
