More cold weather coming
The chief meteorologist for Conduit Ag says the Midwest is preparing for another blast of cold weather.
Eric Snodgrass says the lack of a southern branch of the Jetstream continues to allow periods of cold air to plunge south.
“Early next week, we’re going to bottom out in temperatures again.” He says, “We’re going to see mornings that are probably going to approach -8 to -10 around here, but the problem is, if you don’t want that, you’ve got to have the subtropical component of the jet, and it’s not there.”
He tells Brownfield it’s a rare phenomenon during a La Nina year, but extended outlooks say it’s a pattern that could be around the rest of the winter.
“It’s two to three days we bottom out and then mild air comes in.” He says, “If I had to give you a phrase, it’s that phrase punctuating. We’re going to have these punctuating cold air events that will likely last all the way through February. Maybe a little bit in the beginning of March.”
Snodgrass says it’s likely those troughs of cold air will be accompanied by snow, but…
“That snow is not going to do anything for our soil moisture, nothing significant,” he says.
Brownfield spoke with Snodgrass at the Farm Credit Illinois Fielding Forward event in Champaign.
