More SCN resistant traits available to seed companies

A nematologist says additional Soybean Cyst Nematode resistant soybean varieties are ready to be developed by commercial companies.

“Soybean Cyst Nematode alone is nearly a billion dollars annually in yield loss to our producers.”

Dr. Melissa Mitchum, with the University of Missouri and SCN Coalition, points to research at the University of Illinois which has identified two new resistant genes found in wild soybeans.

“Now it is up to the industry to start incorporating this new type of resistance into their breeding pipeline to get these out to the farmers.  These different modes of action realistically could be available in just a few years.”

The SCN Coalition released their strategic plan to combat the largest soybean yield robbing pest at the recent Commodity Classic.
