More than half of Michigan could get April disaster declaration

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is requesting a presidential disaster declaration for counties affected by severe weather in April.

Whitmer says severe storms, heavy rain, rapid snowmelt, and nine confirmed tornadoes caused widespread damage and severe flooding in 43 counties across Michigan between April 10 and 21.

During April, the National Weather Service issued a record 13 flash flood warnings, 24 flood warnings and 25 flood advisories across Michigan.

 If approved, USDA’s Farm Service Agency would immediately be able to offer producers low-interest loans and other resources. 

The request includes the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Individual Assistance for 37 counties and Public Assistance for 26 counties.

The 43 counties include: Alcona, Allegan, Alpena, Antrim, Arenac, Barry, Benzie, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Clare, Crawford, Eaton, Emmet, Grand Traverse, Gratiot, Iosco, Iron, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Kalkaska, Lake, Leelanau, Manistee, Marquette, Mecosta, Menominee, Missaukee, Montcalm, Montmorency, Muskegon, Newaygo, Oakland, Oceana, Ogemaw, Osceola, Oscoda, Presque Isle, Roscommon, Saginaw, Shiawassee, Tuscola, Washtenaw, and Wexford.
