Most dairy product production declining
The USDA says August dairy product production is continuing to decline alongside milk supplies.
Total cheese production was nearly 1.2 billion pounds, down fractionally from last year and the prior month. Italian cheese production was down 0.6 percent on the year and slightly above July, while American cheese was up fractionally for the year but down 2 percent on the month.
Butter production totaled 140 million pounds, down two percent from the prior year and 12 percent from the last month.
Nonfat dry milk declined more than 15 percent from 2022 while skim milk powder was down nearly 13 percent. Dry whey production was up almost 11 percent while lactose was lowered by one percent on the year
