MSU develops low-cost irrigation system
Researchers at Michigan State University are developing cost-effective technology to help farmers better manage irrigation needs.
The Low-Cost Monitoring System (LOCOMOS) uses in-field sensors that measure soil moisture, leaf wetness, and other factors which are then analyzed to create precise irrigation recommendations.
Researchers say the simpler system could prevent over-irrigation, reduce disease development, and lower water usage.
LOCOMOS has been tested in multiple field and specialty crops over the past three years and farmers have reported increased profits compared to their typical watering schedule.
Researchers expect to develop an automation system in the next phase of the project to trigger irrigation that adapts to unpredictable weather conditions.
The system and app are being developed in partnership with the MSU Innovation Center and USDA.
