MSU offers flooding resources for farmers

Michigan State University Extension says flood-damaged fields should be assessed for potential disaster declarations.

Field Crops Educator Monica Jean tells Brownfield, “We have really challenged our systems and soils with this.”

She says overwintering crops like wheat, canola, and alfalfa need to be evaluated for viability and potential claims.

“When you can get out into your fields, regardless, I think, of the plant and assess root rot or stems or the health of those plants,” she advises.  “That’s going to really let you know, and then trying to get an idea of how much space that takes up, and thinking about it in an economical way.”

She says nitrate testing can also help understand if fertilizer applications have been lost.

Nearly all of Michigan was under a flood warning or watch for multiple days last week, causing Governor Gretchen Whitmer to declare a state of emergency for nearly 40 counties.

Jean says some areas have received up to 14 inches of rain since March 1, and flooding could cause prolonged issues. Find recommendations from MSUE here.
