Naig: House farm bill step forward, but long road ahead

A state ag leader is not expecting the markup of the farm bill in the U.S. House Agriculture Committee to quickly culminate in congressional passage of the legislation.

Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship Secretary Mike Naig says he appreciates committee chair Glenn GT Thompson bringing a bill forward.

“Of course what we know is that this is a process, right. House brings a version, Senate brings a version, and you’re able to then bring that together in a compromise fashion. If you don’t get started with one of those two things, you don’t even have square one accomplished.”

Naig tells Brownfield he supports what’s included in the House version.

“A fix to Prop 12, those types of things. But just schematically, what this does is it shows there’s a willingness and a commitment to moving this forward. And it starts to give us the impression that we could bring some certainty to the situation in 2026 if only we could get this bill moving.”

House Ag Committee markup of the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026 begins Tuesday.
