Naig: Lack of new five-year farm bill a “disappointment”
Iowa’s ag secretary says he’s disappointed lawmakers haven’t been able to pass a new five-year farm bill this year.
“At a time where we’re looking for more certainty and support for farmers, it feels like a missed opportunity. An unforced error if you will.”
Mike Naig tells Brownfield farmers and ranchers deserved certainty. “Every title of the farm bill affects Iowa and is something that’s beneficial to Iowans. We certainly are thinking about those programs that help farmers manage risk, especially in challenging times.”
He says he hopes the new Congress will address the issue in early 2025. “There just isn’t the time necessary to get a five-year farm bill done here in the lame duck. I know that they are working to negotiate on the extension.”
Congress continues to negotiate over another farm bill extension. Minnesota Congressman Brad Finstad recently told Brownfield proposed supplemental assistance and an extension would both be part of a year-end Continuing Resolution if there is enough support.
