Naig optimistic for the fall harvest
INTERVIEW: Iowa Ag Secretary Mike Naig
Iowa’s Ag Secretary says the El Nino weather pattern is giving farmers some optimism heading into fall.
Mike Naig tells Brownfield the gradual transition to El Nino brought much-needed relief this month.
“We were dry in June,” he said. “First part of July got some more widespread rain, then it dried off, and then got hot again. We’ve now started to see a more active weather pattern. I think drought conditions are at least kind of leveling out, maybe even improved in a few places.”
He says expectations are improving for this year’s corn and soybean crop.
“There’s definitely some places that have been impacted negatively by drought, and you’ll see some yield reduction because of that, but I’ve seen some phenomenal looking crops.”
He spoke to Brownfield at the Iowa State Fair.
