NASDA CEO says more funding is needed for food safety
The CEO of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture says more needs to be done to protect the U.S. food supply.
Ted McKinney says federal budget cuts are impacting the food safety industry.
“We think we could easily lose 4 to 500 food safety inspectors from the state,” he says. “Of course, that really starts to hamper progress in terms of production, processing, packaging, and the sale of these products from US farms and ranches.”
He tells Brownfield food safety needs to be a priority under the new administration.
“We do not want and cannot have problems that would cast dispersions on the state of the safety of the food supply, whether it’s for animal feed or for human food,” he says.
McKinney says NASDA is urging Congress to act to expand funding across all three cooperative programs in 2025.
