NASDA leader expects FAD preparedness talks to ramp up

Iowa’s Ag Secretary says he expects foreign animal disease preparedness to be a big discussion point at the upcoming National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) annual meeting.

Mike Naig serves on the association’s animal agriculture committee. “We have to be ready to respond and we have to be doing everything we can to prevent the introduction of a disease like African swine fever.”

He tells Brownfield highly pathogenic avian influenza is another concern. “We just went through high path again in the last year,” Naig said. “Thank goodness we have seen that fall away, at least for the time being. We will have to be very vigilant this fall, but it’s just a reminder that these are constant threats.”

The meeting will be held September 10-13 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Brownfield Ag News will provide updates from the ground.
