Natural resource education outreach

Josh Seehorn, of Outdoor Josh spoke to the Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts annual conference.Mother Nature’s wicked winter weather didn’t delay the start of the Indiana Soil and Water Conservation Districts annual conference yesterday.  The meeting kicked off with Josh Seehorn, a cross-country back-packer and runner that is on a cross-country mission to raise awareness about Envirothon, North America’s largest high school natural resource education competition.  He says he’s been able to tie education in with something he had always wanted to accomplish.

“I had the objective and goal of crossing the country on foot,” he says.  “I thought I could accomplish another goal of telling people about natural resources, telling them about natural resources education, and actually getting some kids to look at it and say ‘hey, that could actually be pretty cool’.”

As Seehorn addressed conservationist yesterday, he talked about the importance of all aspects of sustainability.  “Realizing that certain items are renewable, especially if they’re managed well,” he says.  “Other items may not be renewable and therefore the use of them may not be sustainable and how all of it is connected.”

Seehorn is hiking and running over 4,800 miles from Point Reyes, California to Cape Henlopen, Delaware along the American Discover Trail.  To learn more about Envirothon and his adventure visit www.outdoorjosh.com.

The Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts annual conference concludes on Wednesday.
