NAWG’s Life Cycle Assessment showing advancements in sustainability
The National Association of Wheat Growers says advancements in wheat production sustainability is helping meet growing demand.
CEO of NAWG Chandler Goule says the recently released Life Cycle Assessment shows advancements in climate smart practices.
“Through improved varieties of wheat, precision agriculture, and conservation programs, when you bring all of those things together, you actually have a positive impact not only on the climate, but on your local environment there on your farm,” he says.
The study showed a 33% improvement in greenhouse gas emissions, a 57% reduction in energy production, a 46% decrease in water use, a 45% reduction in land use, and a 60% decrease in soil erosion.
He tells Brownfield the study will be critical to strengthening the industry.
“Trading partners are already and going to continue to ask about climate and environmental impacts,” he says. “For climate smart solutions or conservation programs, and consumers here in the US, we wanted to make sure that we could demonstrate that it is climate smart and environmentally friendly.”
Goule says continued improvement not only benefits the market, but also helps producers stay competitive in a highly competitive environment.
