NBFA applauds farm subsidy transparency bill
The president of the National Black Farmers Association applauds a bill introduced in Congress that would disclose the race and gender of farm subsidy recipients.
John Boyd says Congress must demand full transparency in light of USDA’s long history of discrimination. He says the veil of secrecy must be lifted to know whether the reforms enacted by Congress and proposed by Ag Secretary Vilsack are working.
The Farm Subsidy Transparency Act, sponsored by Congressman Bobby Rush of Illinois and Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey would require USA to publicly disclose the race and gender of people receiving farm loans, ARC and PLC payments, crop insurance premium subsidies, ad hoc disaster and conservation and forestry payments.
