NCBA president-elect says tariffs can be effective against “bad actors”

A leader with the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association is taking a wait-and-see approach to tariff threats by the incoming administration.

NCBA president-elect Buck Wehrbein says what Donald Trump said on the campaign trail is not necessarily what will happen when he takes office.

“Because he is a negotiator, it’s in his blood. So he believes in tariffs.”

The Nebraska custom feedlot operator tells Brownfield tariffs can be effective.

“I don’t particularly believe in tariffs just across the board, however I do believe in them with bad actors. Which China is a big customer of ours, and yet they’re kind of abusive. So I’m okay with tariffs if you pick and choose them.”

President-elect Trump has vowed to impose import tariffs on products entering the U.S. from China, Mexico, and Canada, beginning his first day in office.

Brownfield interviewed Wehrbein at the Minnesota Cattle Industry Convention in St. Cloud, Minnesota Friday.
