NCERC continuing biorenewables advancements
The president of Southern Illinois University says the National Corn to Ethanol Research Center (NCERC) continues to have an impact on the industry.
Daniel Mahoney tells Brownfield many advancements have come from over two decades of research.
“There’s been about 80 products or technologies that have been developed through the work of the Center.” He says, “At pretty much every biofuels facility in the country they’re utilizing some technology that actually traces back to NCERC.”
He says it’s also provided valuable experience for students, as NCERC is housed at SIU’s Edwardsville campus.
“One of the things I always talk about with NCERC, it’s not just the work that they do there, but it’s the people that get that experience there and then go out and work someplace else that continue to do things that are positive for the industry,” he says.
Mahoney says research at the facility is driven by current industry demands.
“And really, all of it is geared towards improving the utilization of corn, which should help drive up prices, and increase profitability for corn growers,” he says.
Mahoney says a goal is to eventually expand NCERC’s footprint and capabilities to further ethanol and biorenewables research efforts.
