NCGA urges new Congress, Trump administration to quickly pass a farm bill, expand trade
The President of the National Corn Growers Association says now that the election is over, Washington needs to focus on a farm bill. Kenneth Hartman, Jr. says, “We’ve kicked the can down the road last year. We don’t need another extension.”
Hartman farms near Waterloo, Illinois. He tells Brownfield with the economic conditions, prices, and inflation, an updated farm bill needs to get done.
Hartman says NCGA members have also been frustrated because they’ve wanted elected leaders to work on more trade deals. “We haven’t had any trade agreements since USMCA, so we’re hoping that some things can come around and we can work with both parties here to, depending on who gets in the House and Senate, to get some things done to open the markets to overseas.”
Hartman says lawmakers need to work on allowing higher blends of ethanol and year-round E15. “Ethanol is home-grown. We think that everybody realizes how important it is to have home-grown products.”
Hartman says NCGA looks forward to working with lawmakers on both sides of the isle. He says getting a farm bill and re-introducing and passing the Next Generation Fuel Act in the new Congress would greatly help corn and ethanol producers.
