Nebraska cattle producer bracing for potential winter storm

A southeast Nebraska farmer has been busy preparing cattle ahead of a potential winter storm this weekend.

Logan Bredemeier says portable windbreak panels and calf shelters are being installed.

“We’re working on getting everyone drove in close off of stock fields that’s either calved or getting ready to calve, to try to keep everyone out of the weather the best we can, and under a closer watch,” he says.

He tells Brownfield because a lot of calving occurs over the winter months, the primary concern during extreme conditions is ensuring calves have the best opportunity for survival.

“We put up different windbreaks in different places for our cattle, keeping snow out of areas so they can bed down somewhere. Having feed stockpiled in the different locations where it’s on site, versus having to haul stuff in everyday so we’re able to just feed and keep them contained,” he says.

The National Weather Service says in addition to snow, much colder air and dangerous wind chills are expected through next week across portions of the western Corn Belt and into the Delta.
