Nebraska Congressman confident farm bill gets done in 2024

A U.S. Congressman from Nebraska is confident a new farm bill will get done this year despite sharp criticism of the Senate framework.

Republican Mike Flood tells Brownfield the legislation is picking up momentum with a likely markup in the House Ag Committee later this month.

“I know there’s a real chance of a farm bill passing because I’m hearing from other members that want to attach different legislation to the farm bill, so there’s clearly a lot of optimism that it’s going to get across the (finish) line. Whether that happens before the election or in the lame duck session, I don’t know.”

He says he believes farm bill negotiations will be driven by the House and suggests the Senate version won’t pass the Senate.

“The House bill is a dream, it’s wonderful. And the Senate version is a disaster.”

Flood says he farm bill priorities are protecting crop insurance, keeping conservation voluntary, and investing in ag research.
