Nebraska corn harvest nearing the finish line
Corn harvest is Nebraska is nearly complete.
According to the USDA, 97% of corn is harvested, slightly ahead of the five-year average of 93%. Western Nebraska farmer Mark Anderson says harvest went well.
“The yields were really good. If you had moisture and you avoided the hail, I would say we were up over the last few years. Lots of grain in the silage we were cutting and corn yields well over 200 (bushels),” he says.
The USDA says winter wheat is rated 34% good to excellent, down slightly from a week ago, with 100% of the crop planted and 91% emerged, both at or slightly ahead of the respective five-year averages. Sorghum is 90% harvested, up slightly from a week ago and near the five-year average of 92%.
Anderson says additional moisture is needed.
“It was nice having a dry harvest, but we’re really dry,” he says.
Topsoil moisture is 38% adequate to surplus and subsoil moisture is 27% adequate to surplus.
