Nebraska corn, soybean conditions nearly unchanged

A south-central Nebraska farmer says his crops are in good condition despite a lack of adequate moisture.

Randy Uhrmacher tells Brownfield…

“With the lack of rain we’ve had here lately that has helped dryland crops hang on a little longer,” he says. “It is time for rain for the non-irrigated, but the irrigated actually looks pretty darn good at this point, a lot better than it has the last couple years.”

According to USDA, corn conditions in the state are 69% good to excellent, with 99% of the crop silking, 63% in the dough stage and 26% dented.

He says soybeans are also looking good.

“Hopefully they don’t start aborting a lot of the pods that they’ve put on, but pod set seems to look pretty good, and they’re about the right height, I think, just tall enough to put a lot of pods on, but still standing pretty decent,” he says.

Soybean conditions are 71% good to excellent with 97% of the crop blooming and 85% setting pods, both ahead of the five-year average.

Sorghum conditions are 70% good to excellent with 85% of the crop headed and 6% coloring.
