Nebraska Farm Bureau asks USDA to purchase pork

The Nebraska Farm Bureau is asking the USDA to consider purchasing pork products to help stabilize the hard-hit hog production sector.

Nebraska FarmBureau president Keith Olsen says additional pork purchases for federal nutrition programs would help the industry at a critical time—and would provide a healthy protein source for users of those nutrition programs.

American Farm Bureau economists say the value of a finishedbarrow or gilt decreased significantly since the outbreak of the H1N1 virus. They estimate the average producer’s operating loss per head has increased from 17 dollars to nearly 32 dollars per head.
