Nebraska Farm Bureau sees both challenges and promise in ag policies
The head of Nebraska Farm Bureau says the Trump Administration has been giving mixed signals, but he’s confident its committed to supporting U.S. agriculture.
Mark McHargue says the plan to import beef from Argentina is disappointing. “I think the kick in the gut is more that the administration actively wanting to try to lower our prices for the beef in the stores. And we know that eventually translates to cattle prices. That was frustrating.”
He says new trade agreement frameworks are a bright spot. “Whether one thing makes up for another, I’m not sure it really works that way. Once you put some doubt in people’s mind in the methodology or the full understanding of agriculture, I think maybe that’ a little bit of the struggle. Does the Administration understand the ins and outs of it?”
McHargue tells Brownfield, “I’m real curious how that will affect the confidence in this administration’s care for farmers and ranchers.”
He says a lot of work has been done, but it will take some time to see how the ag economy is impacted.
