Nebraska farmer hopes negotiations lead to concrete soybean deal with China

A farmer in northeast Nebraska says he’s cautiously optimistic that trade talks between the U.S. and China could result in an agreement that includes soybeans.

“We need it desperately.”

Greg Anderson says China remains the most important trading partner for the commodity and results matter. “I’m certainly looking for real numbers, a real negotiated trade deal that has ink to it and both countries stick by. I know sometimes we have a verbal commitment to buy soybeans in the future, but I don’t think that’s good enough for us to hear this time.”

He tells Brownfield China purchasing their average quota is a good start. “I think that’s probably very much good news. We want to build. We don’t want to plateau or maintain former purchases. We need to show that we’re a reliable supplier and have the superior product.”

And, Anderson says, the best-case scenario would be the export purchases resume immediately and aren’t delayed to 2026.
