Nebraska farmer says cold weather has hindered emergence

South-Central Nebraska farmer Andy Jobman says recent cold weather is impacting the start of the growing season.  

“We’ve had some really cold mornings here this week, which has kind of slowed the last planted corn from emerging,” Jobman said. “We’re watching that close to make sure it gets out of the ground all right and maybe running a pivot or two to soften the crust.”

The Gothenburg farmer tells Brownfield in other years it’s been so cold that he’s had to replant a few acres, but that’s not the case this year. “We’ve had a few frosty mornings where you can see the tops of the alfalfa kind of turned over after that frost hit but everything has bounced back well,” Jobman says.

Jobman says they finished planting corn a while ago and should be done with beans tomorrow.   

He adds the forecast looks promising with several chances of rain through the weekend.
