Nebraska farmer says there’s marginal drought improvement

A Northeast Nebraska farmer says drought conditions have improved slightly ahead of the growing season.

“It’s not unlike what we’ve experienced the last couple of years, maybe just a little bit better than it was last year.”

Greg Anderson grows soybeans near Newman Grove, and says the area received around an inch of rain recently. “It probably isn’t enough to move the drought monitor needle. However, it is encouraging to see some moisture being put back into the topsoil, and we’ll hope that those rains continue throughout the growing season.”

He tells Brownfield he wouldn’t mind a repeat of what happened last year at this time. “It started to rain, and from April 1st through July 4th of 2024 I had over 23 inches of rain, which completely took us out of the extreme drought put us back into normal.”

Anderson says he’s hoping to start planting soybeans at the end of the month, but there are small chances of precipitation in the forecast for the next few weeks.
