Nebraska farmer timely rains helping corn crop ahead of pollination

A south-central Nebraska farmer says timely rains have given his corn crop a head start on pollination.

“I think it will be gravy on top of where we’re sitting at right now.”

Eric Hausermann tells Brownfield, “Growth stages on crops, I think we’re about where we would normally be. We have some corn near tasseling right now, and typically that’s where we’re at around the Fourth of July.”

The USDA says corn condition is rated 75 percent good-to-excellent with 8 percent in the dough stage.

He says this is one of his best dry land crop so far. “We’ve had some pretty strong growth in the last couple of weeks. We’ve received about 3 to 3 and ¼ inches of rain in the last couple of weeks. Our dryland corn looks to be promising.”

Soybean condition is seen at 71 percent good-to-excellent, and 7 percent has set pods. Pasture and range conditions are rated 71 percent fair to excellent. Twenty-two percent of wheat has been harvested.
