Nebraska farmer to begin soybean harvest this week
A Nebraska farmer says he intends to begin harvesting soybeans this week.
Jay Reiners tells Brownfield his crops are mostly good.
“We’ve snagged some rain. Dryland’s going to be alright, probably not as good as we were hoping but going to be better than the last two years. Dryland beans, I don’t know what this heat has done to them,” he says.
According to USDA, soybean conditions in the state are 65% good to excellent, with 1% of the crop harvested and 44% of the crop dropping leaves, behind the 54% five-year average.
Reiners says he’s optimistic for harvest.
“We’ll find out here in a couple weeks, I imagine if it’s going to stay hot and dry, it’ll push the corn pretty hard,” he says.
Corn harvest began last week in Nebraska and USDA says 5% of the crop is harvested, slightly ahead of the 4% five-year average.
Winter wheat planting also picked up last week, with 21% planted, up from 7% last week and ahead of the 18% five-yar average.
