Nebraska farmer weighing timeline for fertilizer purchases

An eastern Nebraska farmer says purchasing fertilizer is becoming extremely difficult due to volatility in the markets.  

Mitch Oswald says cost of production is increasing. “We’re going to have to find opportunities to market or hold out and hope for a market recent for fertilizer. Input prices haven’t gone down and we’re going to have to be really cautious for what we do for next year.”

He tells Brownfield he recently quoted fertilizer prices for the 2026 crop year. “We got our 32-nitrogen price and that’s $140 a ton more than it was this year.”

But, Oswald says, there has been some good news about corn prices. “They’ve rebounded some this year. If you are proactive and able to get things marketed beforehand, there are opportunities.”

He says he’s still considering how he will adjust his crop nutrient plan.
