Soybean planting has wrapped up for south-central Nebraska farmer Mike Bergen.

“Conditions have been really good. We had a little pop hail storm and rain a couple of days ago and worked through that. We had to jump from field to field just a little bit.”

The latest crop progress and condition report from USDA says 8 percent of corn has been planted, and 2 percent of soybeans are in. Forty-four percent of the wheat crop is rated fair.

He tells Brownfield many farmers got ahead on field work due to on-going drought, but there was some relief earlier this month. “There’s been good moisture. We had a nice rain in central Nebraska even though it didn’t get everybody. We had a nice inch of rain the first week of April and that set us up for some pretty good planting conditions.”

Bergen says corn planting should start this week.
