Nebraska FFA expanding ag awareness in urban classrooms
Some Nebraska FFA members say building connections in urban communities is an important step for growing the future of agriculture.
Leah Christen, state secretary from Lewiston, says students are getting more exposure through hands-on outreach and education. “To bridge that gap there we have programs like Ag Pen Pals or Ag in the Classroom where people in rural communities or classrooms can connect with people that it might not be in their back yard like some of us.”
Jadyn Tidyman, state vice president from Chadron, says introducing students to different pathways can help them discover potential careers. “Where they can’t have traditional ranches or farms, they have other options like aquaculture or fish farms or something like that. That helps broaden members scopes and figure out what they’re interested in.”
Both members say it’s important for students to realize most careers in agriculture exist beyond the farm or ranch.
