Nebraska governor says rainfall aiding wildfire recovery efforts
Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen says recent precipitation has brought much-needed optimism for ranchers recovering from this spring’s wildfires.
He tells Brownfield it’s been an extremely difficult couple of months, but, “When you get into the Cottonwood fire, they’ve had some moisture. It’s helping. There are certain areas in the Sandhills that have had some moisture and the grass has started to grow.”
Pillen says his administration continues to work with state and federal agencies to provide regulatory relief for disaster assistance. “I think that we’re making some headway to make things easier for people’s repairs.”
On Tuesday, Pillen requested a disaster designation from USDA to help provide additional options for producers in affected counties. The designation would make producers eligible for emergency FSA loans.
The request covers Garden, Grant, Lincoln and Morrill counties, which met the 30 percent threshold of grassland loss.
