Nebraska rancher says managing risk is harder with more uncertainty

A Nebraska rancher says it’s becoming harder to manage risk due to on-going drought and uncertainty in the market.

Jaclyn Wilson of Lakeside tells Brownfield, “Everything is so extreme right now. We’re seeing record prices that we have never seen.  I call it out of control even though it is very beneficial, but something always can happen whether it’s a crash or something.”

She says she’s had to be flexible with her marketing plan this year. “I’m selling cattle here next week that I usually take to grass, and hanging on to cattle that I would’ve sold back in March. It’s always looking at different avenues and opportunities. It may not always work out, but if it does, great.”

Wilson says adding pasture range forage insurance as an additional safety net has been a game changer for her operation, too.
