NEFB committee chair hopeful for policy to help young farmers be successful
The chair of the Young Farmers and Ranchers Committee for Nebraska Farm Bureau says creating opportunities for farmers to be successful is crucial.
Josh England tells Brownfield he’s hopeful policy can be developed to ensure young farmers can flourish.
“I would think maybe if they have some different tax incentives, and I think that’s going to be coming through, that’ll help lower our land taxes,” he said. “That’ll also help bring a little more income to the operation.”
He says young farmers often need some financial support.
“It’s a little challenging for them to get started where they don’t own any ground or land or animals. So the FSA sure helps, and there’s a lot of other programs out there as well,” he says.
England says with the rising cost of ag equipment, farmers may need to consider more non-traditional avenues.
“If you can consolidate with your neighbor to buy a combine or some trucks or something to help you guys out and pick together or farm together, that’ll sure make it go a lot better economically,” he says.
Brownfield interviewed England at the 2024 Nebraska Farm Bureau annual meeting, in Kearney, Nebraska.
