NEFB policy expert says farm bill extension discussions are heating up
With less than two weeks remaining in the lame duck session, an ag policy expert says Congress is inching closer to a farm bill extension.
Nebraska Farm Bureau Senior Director of National Affairs Jordan Dux tells Brownfield the question is now, how long it will be extended.
“And then, what that means for the future of that important legislation,” he says.
He says there is still a lot of uncertainty that remains.
“We need to see increased reference prices. We need to see updates to that. We need to make sure that safety net is there for farmers and ranchers,” he says.
Dux says he expects Congress will also consider a disaster assistance bill.
“Lawmakers will say if the farm bill would have been done on time, this is what that money would have been, and so it would have been the same equivalent amount of money spent,” he says. “I think we’re going to see something like that happen. I think we’re going to see both of those pass.”
He says he remains hopeful a new farm bill will be adopted during the first 100 days of the new Congress.
Brownfield interviewed Dux at the 2024 Nebraska Farm Bureau annual meeting in Kearney, Nebraska.
