New bill introduced in Congress to lower egg prices
A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers have introduced a bill they say will lower the cost of eggs for consumers.
Dusty Johnson, a U.S. Representative from South Dakota, is a sponsor of the Lowering Egg Prices Act. He says the bill rolls back regulations and takes a different food safety approach for breaker eggs.
“Those are eggs that at some point got broken and regardless of what you do with them, the eggs are pasteurized. Those don’t need to be refrigerated quite as quickly, because they’re cooked. But the Obama-era regulation says we do have to refrigerate them immediately and if you don’t, they have to be thrown away.”
Johnson says by not throwing the eggs away, the egg supply would improve. Johnson says the bill could stand alone or be included in the next farm bill.
Other bill sponsors include Kristen McDonald Rivet from Michigan, Pat Harrigan from North Carolina and Josh Riley from New York.
