New HPAI case confirmed in Iowa
The Iowa Department of Agriculture says another case of highly pathogenic avian influenza has been confirmed in the state.
The infection was detected in Kossuth County on a farm with game bird pheasants, peafowl, and commercial layer chickens.
State veterinarian Dr. Jeff Kaisand tells Brownfield birds are depopulated after an HPAI case is confirmed. “The quicker we can do it, it decreases the amount of virus that’s in those premises and also it greatly reduces the chance of it spreading to another site.”
The department says commercial and backyard flock owners should prevent contact between their birds and wild birds.
Iowa has had nine positive HPAI cases this fall, according to IDALS.
