New “Illinois Grown” label debuts

The executive director of the Illinois Specialty Growers Association says a new “Illinois Grown” label is headed to market shelves.

Reghala Scavuzzo tells Brownfield…

“There’s always been a discussion we really want to highlight what’s been actually grown in Illinois.”  She says, “And so, the Illinois Department of Agriculture this week is launching the Illinois Grown brand and relaunching their branding program.”

She says it helps Illinois farmers stand out, and it informs consumers.

“You know if it has that logo, if it’s a value-added product, so, if it’s jam or jelly, at least one item was grown in Illinois, or if it’s a raw agricultural product, you know it came from our Illinois farmers.”  She says, “And I think understanding where your food comes from is very important.”

Scavuzzo says producers interested in utilizing the Illinois Grown label should contact the Illinois Department of Agriculture’s Illinois Products program.
