New Illinois law changes JULIE notification time

A damage prevention manager with JULIE, Incorporated says a new Illinois law changes the notification timeline for excavation projects in the state.

Roger Watwood tells Brownfield…

“It’s going to take effect starting January 1, 2025.”  He says, “The day of the call to JULIE does not count at all. Then you have two full days, business days, before the ticket would be valid.”

He says anyone doing any kind of digging project is required to contact JULIE.

“If you ever plan to do any type of excavation, that means if you have a shovel in your hand and you’re gonna penetrate the surface of the earth, to whatever depth, the law in Illinois requires, a call to JULIE,” he says.

Watwood says that call starts the process of utility companies locating and marking their underground facilities, and ultimately helps prevent costly damage.

“If you don’t have a locate request to do the work you’re doing, say, replacing the fence post and you damage that line, you would be 100% responsible for the repair.”  He says, “So, it’s the cheapest insurance we have is probably make that free phone call.”

He says call 811, or visit juliebeforeyoudig.com, before beginning any digging project in Illinois.
