New initiative is helping support Ohio farm families through the succession planning process

An ag attorney with Ohio State University says a new statewide initiative is helping farmers plan for the next generation.

Robert Moore says the Ohio Farm Transition Network provides educational materials and support to help producers make informed decisions.

“Farm families often have a difficult time finding resources,” he says. “This program will help them find the necessary resources to start and hopefully complete their farm transition plan.”

He tells Brownfield the effort matches farmers with qualified agribusiness professionals.

“Many farm families need a trust, so they need an attorney,” he says. “Then they need an accountant that understands all of the income tax implications of our plan. There are professionals out there that can help them with solutions and strategies.”

Funding for the project is provided by AgCredit, Farm Credit Mid-America, Nationwide, Ohio Corn and Wheat, and the Ohio Soybean Council.
