New SCN Management Guides aim to help farmers protect profitability

Brownfield's Erin Anderson interviews Horacio Lopez-Nicora from Ohio State Extension.

A plant pathologist with Ohio State University Extension says farmers need to be proactive when it comes to managing soybean cyst nematode.

Horacio Lopez-Nicora says the first step is to send in a soil test.

“We want to know how much we have,” he says. “Know your numbers, because that will help us dictate the management strategies that we will apply.”

He tells Brownfield SCN continues to be the number one yield-robbing pest for soybeans.

“That’s why we want to avoid repeating that same source of resistance continuously,” he says. “This will allow and help us to stop or slow down the adaptation of that population to help protect yields and reduce SCN population.”

Lopez-Nicora says the SCN Coalition and the United Soybean Board have launched four new management guides to help farmers determine the best plan of action for their fields. For more information, click here.
