New soy processing plant coming to Michigan

Wisconsin-based Quality Roasting has announced it will build a $10 million soybean processing plant in Michigan’s Thumb.

Michigan Economic Development Corporation CEO Jeff Mason says the new facility in Reese will make the state’s agriculture and food-processing industries more competitive and benefit livestock farmers and consumers.

Construction should start by April and finish in time to accept soybeans during the 2019 harvest.  The plant is a joint venture between Quality Roasting and the DeLong Company.  It’s expected to process more than two million bushels of soybeans for meal and oil primarily for the dairy industry, utilizing about two percent of Michigan’s annual soy production.

The company received an $80,000 grant from the Michigan Business Development program, $75,000 Food and Agriculture Investment grant, and a 50 percent property tax abatement from the local township which secured the project over competing sites in New York and Wisconsin.
