New weed control tools require careful management
A crop protection specialist says the agriculture industry can’t afford to repeat the mistakes that have led to widespread herbicide resistance.
Dennis Christie with WinField United tells Brownfield, “We did a lot of things wrong with some of our trait packages in the past. We need to respect that and move forward with really good understanding that when we get new innovation, it’s going to come in a bag and not so much new chemistry.”
He says growers will need to follow label instructions to preserve the efficacy of new modes of action. “We used less-than-lethal rates. We sprayed when the weeds were too big. We sprayed very haphazardly. Non AMS-type water conditions and a lot of things we put in the tank to help us, and we lost that pretty quick.”
Christie says it will be critical that farmers, agronomists and retailers communicate how to apply products when they come to market.
