NFU members express growing concern over faltering farm safety net

The vice president of advocacy for the National Farmers Union (NFU) says the organization’s membership is concerned about the faltering farm safety net.

Mike Stranz says resolutions from state conventions across the country are showing a common theme.

“I think there’s a lot of frustration with the farm safety net, especially given how farm bills have dragged on, and what was supposed to be the 2023 farm bill may well end up being the 2026 farm bill.”  He says, “A lot of those programs there haven’t addressed the big issue of preventing ad hoc disaster programs from being needed.”

He tells Brownfield…

“The reconciliation bill that passed back in the summertime only took care of a few parts of the farm bill, some important parts, but it wasn’t the whole thing.”  He says, “We’ve got some issues to address there, whether it’s on competition, or on conservation, or rural development. So, there’s more work to be done.”

Stranz says the recently passed continuing resolution extended the 2018 Farm Bill for another year, but NFU wants to see action on updated legislation sooner rather than later.
